Detect Carrier IQ on Android phones with Voodoo Carrier IQ Detector App

A review of the Voodoo Carrier IQ Detector app for Android! This will help you determine if your device has CIQ or not. Let me know what you think, and what device you run this app with!

There are some parts of CIQ that can't be removed, but can't function without the other. If a certain part is removed then it will cause a bootloop within the phone, if you have a number below 200, I'd say for now you are good :)

Android’s East Coast BBQ…

ALL ROADS LEAD TO RALEIGH…

.

If you have not heard the news, we are trying to create an event similar to the Austin, TX Android BBQ for those on the East Coast. This event will likely be called: Android’s East Coast BBQ

.

Before I begin, this is in no way shape or form supposed to be anything other than a tribute to Austin and their success. They’ve done a great thing the past 2 years and will continue getting bigger and better. Their “awesomeness” is what inspired us to host an event (that we could afford) on the East Coast. I have reached out to them to seek their help and knowledge.

.

Alright, so what should you expect from Android’s East Coast BBQ?

.

Great question. I do not know either. I have a great itinerary in place but we are in the early stages. This is the fun time – everything is fresh and all ideas are on the table. After you read what I can release now, I’d love to hear feedback from you guys. Your thoughts… who do you want to attend… what companies do you want here? Can you help organize this?

.

Note that this is preliminary and I am not releasing all details. There will be surprises.

.

Saturday we will meet at a local restaurant and brewery in downtown Raleigh. They have a separate upstairs area with several rooms. We will have many companies, app developers, Android developers and themers all talking about what they are doing for Android and where they think we are heading. We will spend a lot of time drinking beer, socializing and learning (perhaps in that order). We will have some special events/contests at this time and hopefully some sponsors can throw out some freebies.

.

Saturday evening we will either have a bar crawl on Glenwood South in downtown Raleigh. This area is littered with great bars and attractive people. We will flood it with Android geeks getting their drink on and take over every bar we enter. If the bar crawl does not happen, there has been talks of a themed party. There are tons of great locations for this type of event in Raleigh.

.

Sunday we will be meeting for lunch in one of Downtown Raleigh’s greatest parks. It is beautiful here. We will serve NC BBQ (the best BBQ you’ve ever had – this is a very strong topic in these parts). We hope to have some form of music, likely NC bluegrass (acoustic) to stick with the NC theme. This time will be for socializing and talking about the previous day. All developer sessions will be on Saturday. There may be other plans in the works to add on here.

.

I have reached out to local friends to help design the site for this event – their company will likely be a sponsor. I have reached out to a local organization for help with bluegrass music. I have reached out to a local BBQ restaurant to help us out. I’ve been reaching out to several local companies to assist us as well (Raleigh has MANY providers, manufacturers, app companies, etc here… incuding HTC, Swype, Verizon, etc). This is still a big work in progress as we are not even certain what our needs are… we just know an event for Android fans will be better when the major players are there to interact with us. We need to figure out how we are going to tackle this. I will say, in one day I was able to make huge strides with some big companies…. they want to meet you guys.

.

The event will likely be around May so those who are in college will hopefully be done with classes. This time does not seem to interfere with other Android events. It is also an INCREDIBLE time to enjoy NC weather.

.

I love my city. There are tons of incredible tech companies here. We are the Silicon Valley of the East Coast and we are loaded up with genuine and caring people (South baby!). I know you guys will leave here impressed by Raleigh. It is vibrant and beautiful with a great night life. All that is missing are all of my Android friends. Come join me.

.

Now, I have been VERY active planning this on the preliminary level. In the near future I will be handing over the planning to Android Syndicate (their site). You may want to start following them on Twitter too (@acsyndicate). These guys were the ones who had the initial idea to have an East Coast gathering – I just lobbied that Raleigh would be ideal and wanted to get the ball rolling to make it as easy as possible for them.

.

We will be releasing a LOT more information when we can. For now… I need your suggestions. Feedback on pricing, ideas for events, contests, who should be here (companies and developers/themers)… ANYTHING IS OPEN TO CONSIDERATION.

.

THIS IS YOUR EVENT…. MAKE IT BETTER!!!

.

Let us know what YOU want.

EI22 Gingerbread Android 2.3.5 has been leaked! Is it official?

Alright, now there is a leaked build of the leaked photo I wrote about earlier this month. I have personally put it on my Samsung Epic and ran it, so I know it is real! Here is a review of it on the Epic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvLIt9pz8Kc.
This is currently a leaked build, but my guess is that it might be official! Only time will tel, but my guess is Epics might be getting an OTA (over the air) update sometime very soon. This is very exciting for Epic owners, as Gingerbread has been long awaited. I will be sure to keep everyone updated as things progress!
This is awesome, because even more roms will be coming out soon! From what I hear, this build is very fast and snappy and works well! Hopefully Samsung and Sprint finally release a good update for the Epic.

Do you use a screen protector to guard your phone?

This is a topic that is always up for debate. I myself struggle with it to decide whether or not to protect my phone with a screen protector. Many of the screens today come with gorilla glass which is a very strong and sturdy glass. Devices such as the Nexus S 4G, Samsung Epic 4G, and Epic 4G Touch all have gorilla glass. My question to you is, do you use a screen protector? Or do you just rely on the insurance plan you have for your phone or even just risk it without a plan? The reason I ask, is because it has always been something I have been torn over. The protectors definitely take away from the screen vibrancy and coloring. I have used a protector on my device for an extended period of time and was amazed at how much better the screen looked after I took it off. They also can take away from the feel of the device and screen and make it a little more difficult to navigate. When I had my first Android phone (my Samsung Epic) I always had a screen protector on it to begin with. It was something I wanted to protect and take care of. Eventually, I took it off and started risking damage for the amazing look of the super amoled screen. Since then, I have not used a screen protector on any phone I have owned. Not once has a screen been scratched, cracked or damaged in any way. This makes me question, are the screen protectors really necessary? I don't plan to use them, but if other have other opinions on the matter please share! I would love to hear whether or not you use them and why! Thanks!

Benchmarks are not very significant to me

I know many many people rely on benchmarks when choosing which rom to run on their Android phone. In my experience and opinion, benchmarks are nothing but a number. To be completely honest, I feel that benchmarks are really only significant when on stock. And even then, they're really not that significant. Developers have the ability to fake benchmarks at their will if they so choose. This causes them to be inaccurate and inflated. Of course, not having an accurate benchmark cannot possibly tell someone how well their phone will perform in real world performance. This is all that I care about when flashing roms. I test them as much as I can and determine which one handles my needs the best based on real world performance. I do recall when I first started rooting my Samsung Epic and flashing roms I would flash every single rom available, run a couple benchmarks and write down the scores. I would then figure out which rom scored the highest and run that rom... Even if real world performance suffered. I have experienced and learned much since then! Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with benchmarks.. I just feel that people rely on them a little too heavily sometimes (like me in my early rooting days).
Let me know what you think and how much you rely on benchmarks!

Screen Size of Cell Phones and Hand Size have a Direct Correlation

There is always a continual debate on whether screen sizes are getting too big on Android phones. In my opinion, that debate will continue until people hand's become the same size. This is why variety is a key feature for Android phones. Having the ability to choose the size screen that you have just adds to the appeal for Android. Hand size plays a key role in whether the screen is too big for yourself or not. I have come up with the "four corner" test to tell whether or not the screen can fit your hand size. This test can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zwSYrcp7t4. Everyone likes having a choice, and this is why it is great to be able to choose which screen size you like best. iPhones do have a downside to having only one screen size (3.5 inches) and that is NO variety. Which is something the iphone lacks (obviously). Just my opinion on screen sizes and whether they are getting too big! It all depends on the person!

Is overclocking your Android phone worth it?

Many, many people ask me if I overclock my phone. In short, the answer is no. I overclock my devices for testing purposes only. For daily use, I usually keep my phone at the stock clock speed. Sometimes I will even underclock my phone. You might be asking, why is this? The main reason is battery life. Overclocking will, of course, make battery life worse. While I have used many Android devices, I don't find overclocking to improve performance enough for me to sacrifice the battery life for it. When I say performance, I don't mean benchmark performance. I am referring to real world performance when I say "performance." Benchmarks is a whole different topic I will address soon :)

My ideal phone can go an entire day without needing to be charged (from when I wake up until I go to sleep). Later Android devices, such as the Samsung Epic Touch 4G has been getting significantly better battery life than the original Samsung Epic. This brings me hope! Don't get me wrong, I would love to overclock my device. With current battery life as it is though, overclocking is out of the question.

Let me know what you guys think! Do you overclock your cpu? Do you think sacrificing battery life is worth it? Which CPU software overclocking do you use?
